Life In An Election Year: Stupidity Abounds

Sometimes in life I find myself wondering, "Are these people serious?" Never do I find myself thinking this more often than during an election year. Being that I live in a fiercely conservative state (Wyoming), I actually find myself questioning the sanity of those surrounding me quite often. Here is an EXAMPLE of the kind of backward thinking that leads me to believe some people missed that day of 9th grade Civics class where we learned about the Bill of Rights (you know, those pesky amendments that secure everyone's equality)...............................................That was me giving you time to click the link and watch the insanity..................................................And that was me giving you time to really take in the absurdity of the ideas expressed in that ad. I mean, "I propose we protect Wyoming families just like Arizona did"? I have so many issues with this campaign ad, but first and foremost I need to know exactly what Arizona is protecting it's families from? Obviously this is a reference to undocumented immigrants, but do we need protecting from them? Have I missed a myriad of news stories proving undocumented immigrants to be irrationally violent or otherwise harmful to families? If so, then thank Gaga for Ron Micheli and his willingness to shower us in the same unbridled prejudiced shown in Arizona. However, if, as I suspect, that is not the case; then I hope everyone can get a little perspective and realize that this is not the right person to place in office. (Same goes for Rita Meyer btw, but at least she's not putting out the same caliber of stupidity in her ads).

Next up, this advertisement is a little more than a year old, but has come back into prominence as Prop 8 was overturned last week in California. This video makes me feel physically ill and not only because I wholeheartedly disagree with this viewpoint, but because of how absolutely asinine the arguments made here sound. For instance, the California doctor who must choose between her faith and her job (and this is my favorite moment, because not even the biggest supporter of Prop 8 can hear this and think "yeah, that makes a lot of sense and I agree!"). I just cannot understand how people can be so fearful and not even be able to offer reasonable justification for that fear. Luckily, I'm not alone in thinking this was an insane and poorly done advertisement. Check out this parody from the Funny or Die crew. Most of the thoughts I had while watching the original video are nicely summed up in this parody and it gives me some peace of mind to know that I'm not the only one who enjoys pointing out blatant displays of stupidity.

  1. AHHH Stone I loved this post. First, God save Wyoming from these ridiculous people feeding their children huge bowls of fruits and hating health care. Sometimes I really have no hope for this state.

Second, I think I watched that anti-gay marriage campaign in a Sociology of Sexuality class I had....although I'd never seen the parody. With which I'm now in love. So in love, in fact, that I'm gonna gay marry it. And I won't stop until everyone else is gay married to it, too.

My top 2 favorite parts of the real campaign:

    1) "My freedom will be taken away" OH REALLY, and how would that feel, having your freedom taken away? How about not being free to MARRY WHOMEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT? You're really gonna use "freedom" to justify this? YOUR freedom? Because gay people getting married makes YOU less free. Explain that one. Aaaand go.

    2) "A rainbow coalition of people of every creed and color" Heh. Rainbows. Gay.
