One Of The Many Wonders Of My Brain

While composing my last post, my favorite song OF ALL TIME came up on my Zune and I had to put the post on pause while I belted out the lyrics and danced around my kitchen. This disturbed my dog greatly. That's beside the point, but lends weight to idea of how out of the ordinary this is for me. I have this issue where I absolutely cannot remember the lyrics to songs. Any songs. Ever. Even if I listen to a song 97 times over the span of three days (Love Today by Mika for example) I will not be able to sing along. This is the way it has been my whole life with a few significant exceptions.

When I was roughly seven years old, I became obsessed with Sugar Sugar- The Archies. To this day it remains my favorite song. Ever, of all time. It also happens to be the first song I was ever able to learn and remember all of the lyrics to.

The next year LL Cool J released Mr. Smith and I heard Doin' It on the radio for the first time. I was eight years old and constantly running around the house repeating the lyrics of this song. "I represent Queens, she was raised out in Brooklyn" was my favorite part and obviously I had no idea what the rest of the song was actually about but, I'm proud to say I knew all of the lyrics.

That same year a film called Carpool came out and I was entranced by a song on the soundtrack; I Wanna Be Sedated- The Ramones. This subsequently sparked my undying love for The Ramones, but I've still never been able to memorize any of their other songs. Which, believe me, is absolutely ridiculous considering how short and not at all complicated they are.
Later in the year Toni Braxton released Secrets along with a Tyson Beckford filled video for Un-Break My Heart. I begged my parents to go out and buy me the cd and then proceeded to listen to this song on repeat for approximately two years. All I can think of when I hear it now is my ridiculous 15 pound "portable" stereo and Tyson Beckford. The latter is 100% fine by me. I mean....have you seen that pic at the beginning of this post?

A few years down the road I was fourteen and discovered I Do by Toya. I'm pretty sure my ability to remember the lyrics to this song has something to do with this verse: "He was a six foot stallion, said a storybook thug. He was the kind that made you wonder how he put down the love. He had a hickey in his pocket, a phat rock in his ear. He made my heart stop palpitating every time he came near. He had a spankin' new Range, sport a tight wardrobe. His pants were saggin', he was plaited and his hair was corn rowed. He had his wrists bling-blingin' and his long legs was bow. He tried to push up on me, but I knew he had me at go." Who could forget that!? Come on!
The most recent song I was able to learn all of the lyrics to was Can I get A.... by Jay-Z, Amil, and Ja Rule. Have I mentioned how much I loved the 90s? LOVED. My best friend and I decided this was the best song for "cruising." Basically that means we were fifteen, stupid, and didn't pay for our own gas. We would drive all over town blaring this song out of her Volkswagen Passat. Jeezus. Being a teenager was horrifying, but reminiscing about being a teenager is an absolute nightmare. Never the less, I could still repeat every word of this song if asked. Right up until Ja Rule's verse, that is. We always started it over when we heard his voice. I'll never know what I'm missing there, I guess.
That last one was about eight years ago. I just wonder why it is that I'm unable to remember songs I actually like and what exactly does it say about me that these are the songs my brain committed to memory? Sugar Sugar is innocent enough, but Doin It? At age eight? That confuses me and makes me uncomfortable. Oh well, I just thought this was an interesting fact everyone should know about me.
